The Asian Green Revolution has been amazing, but Ghana has found that it is not one size fits all. Agricultural intensification and greening requires that the process be adjusted to the local climate and flora. While rice and wheat were easily ramped up in Asia, these crops do not grow as well in most African climates. Fuel cell vans and hybrid buses are just the latest projects to receive funding from the UK’s special fund for innovative green technologies. 32.8 Million Pounds have been allocated so far for public transit research and development, and the results so far have not been disappointing. Students at George Mason University, in Virginia, has found a new way to fight fires. Their innovative fire extinguisher works off of sound waves, extinguishing flames without any chemicals like those used in commercial fire extinguishers. It can even put out grease fires in kitchens, a notoriously common problem. No pollution and safe for all to use, this green technology gets two thumbs up.

In Hyderabad, India, local authorities have been struggling with two problems. One is safe waste disposal, and the other is ensuring an adequate power supply. For a Swedish team in town, these go hand in hand. By burning waste, Hyderabad can use that power to provide energy to its grid. Approximately 3/8 of their waste is estimated to be usable for this project. No part of the project is wasted; it focuses on total resource allocation.

The government in Penang, Malaysia, is providing monetary incentives to any building owners who install rain water harvesting systems this year. It is aimed at promoting healthy water use patterns, as water consumption in Penang is currently the highest in all of Malaysia. This is only one of eight sustainability projects for which his administration has allocated funds.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has announced a green breakthrough for the leather industry. They have come up with a new dispersing agent which halves the amount of water necessary for the tanning process. In India alone, this will save 200 million liters of water daily. Another part of the process has been sped up from 72 tours to just 30 minutes.

Advances in fuel efficiency and pollution abatement have been pushing the industry further towards the technological cutting edge.
