The Rain Forest in Rio’s Backyard

Rio de Janeiro is one of the three largest cities in South America. Brazil’s one-time capitol, the are around the city was quickly deforested for farming and plantations. All of this led to the sharp decline of the Mata Atlantica, Brazil’s southern, Atlantic rain forest. Thanks to environmental conservation groups and new laws, though, the Mata Atlantica is coming back.
