This Indian company is developing biogas from waste and harnessing it to create cheap, green electricity. Their system uses less water and generates biogas twice as quickly as current plants doing the same thing.

After years of planning, the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft was finally launched. The main purpose of the craft is to study magnetic reconnection. We know that this has the potential to generate vast amount of clean energy, but we don’t know how to harness it. Hopefully they find a way!

Even though we (obviously) cannot see the Earth’s mantle, it has a large impact on our environment. Scientists at Princeton are mapping it in 3D to allow for a better study and understanding of this part of our planet. This project will allow us to understand what is going on beneath the crust, and may aid us understanding earthquakes better. Sweet.

Just a reminder from the University of Toronto; switching from fossil fuels to electric is not always a green choice. It all depends on how your electricity is generated. If the electrical generation causes more pollution than your original fuel, that is a net negative for the environment. This is yet another reason to lobby your congressional representative in favor of alternative and clean energy power plants to replace oil, coal, and natural gas as fuel sources.

Some new Australian efficient technology is being tested in China. It is a smart technology that takes waste from blast furnaces and converts it into a new product that one can make cement with. The process is known as Dry Slag Granulation. Considering the continuing building boom in China, another source for cement will save money and be better for the environment than upping normal production.

The first attempt to fly around the world entirely under solar power began Monday in Abu Dhabi. If it succeeds, this will be the capstone to 13 years of research and development by the two Swiss pilots. The plane is about the size of a jumbo jet, but barely weighs more than a civilian car. I will watch this journey with interest.
