In Goa, the mines used to silt up the Mandovi river. They damaged farms and almost irreparably harmed the local fishing industry, with so much pollution in the water from the local iron mines that the river would run red at times. In 2012, the Indian government banned mining in the area, but that ban is on the edge of being overturned. Let’s hope that, if the mining is brought back, it is properly supervised and controlled by the Indian government to prevent another environmental catastrophe.
